Subject: RE: Adding VFD to swingarm pivots

Michigan
We installed two Baldor VFDs on two 1200 gal/min wells this spring. One well feeds a corner system and also is used to fill our sprayers, the other well feeds two systems nozzled for 1200 as well as a small system nozzled for 400.

The VFDs have worked very well so far for both applications. You can go out and watch the motor rpms drop as the corner comes in and the end gun shuts off all while maintain the same psi in the line. For the well that feeds both large and small pivots we have different presets that we switch between when we switch valves. Very easy to do.

For filling our sprayers we turn the VFD down to it's lowest allowed setting and can fill the sprayer at a nice pace without having to run water out to a pivot as well. We were at the point of having to put a new well in exclusively for filling sprayers bc it was getting too hard on starters always starting that motor up. Starters were getting hard to find and were very expensive if you could, drilling a well was also going to be pricey, this saved us from either.

The power company claims it will save us on our bill even of we use the same amount of energy while it's actually running. They said the initial pull of starting one of these large motors is what generates a decent part of the power bill. They said with the soft start of the VFDs they can't even tell when a well is running where as before they knew every time we started one up. We will see how that works out.
