NE Iowa | Plant the shortest stiffest strawed variety you can find. Oats will go down if you look at it funny. Plant at least 3 bu/acre. Plant as soon as possible in the spring. A little frost still in the ground is fine. Shoot for the last week of March. In order to get 100 bu/acre you are going to need to apply fungicide. We always just straight cut our oats. To get 100 bales of straw you will likely need to cut the oats high, spread the straw, and clip it with a mower conditioner. | |
