10 miles North west of Billings is better than north.  Your  about 12-14 inch annual prec.   No till is better than summer fallow for most of it.  700 acres of dry land is a weekend farm.   The Summer fallow looses too much moisture. The Chem Fallow no till is working good in most of Montana dryland with some areas doing well with every year cropping.

 Be best to work with a existing dryland farmer in the area that knows his stuff. 

 I farm east & west of Billings on the Irrigated. 



That's the plan. Wife won't let me quit my cushy office job quite yet. Haha. The guy I'm looking at taking over already agreed to be a "mentor," which is worth a ton.
