Subject: Montana Dryland Newb

Mount Vernon, WA
Morning.

First want to say thanks to everyone on this forum, recently joined but have lurked for a while, and I've learned a lot already.

Down to business: currently I'm in talks to take over a ~700 acre farm (about 10 miles North of Billings, MT, for those who know the area). All of it is currently sitting fallow since last fall. The plan currently is to plant two of the fields (about 550ac.) with winter wheat this fall, and plant the balance with barley this spring. Fallow is something foreign to me, and was wondering if planting peas/beans of some kind would make more sense as far as nitrogen fixation in a rotation, as well as organic matter. I've heard and seen quite a bit about dryland peas around here. For background, it's been farmed "conventionally" as long as anyone can remember (two/three tillage passes before planting with disc/field cultivator). Like the idea of switching to no-till, but that won't be in the cards for quite a while. According to google, average annual precipitation out here is 14-18". Alright, I think I'm done rambling for now.

Thanks for any and all comments/advice/criticism.

L. D.
