Subject: 1486, broken rear axle shaft, how to get it home?

Callao Missouri
My good neighbor and land lord was brushoging old farmers welfare ground, and got the 14 up on the outside duels only supporting the rear of the tractor. The axle shaft broke off with about three inches protruding from the final drive housing. This tractor is setting pretty bad in this ditch, and is on poor ground to be working on the machine.

I think I can slide the duel hub on what is protruding from the housing enough to get the first u bolt clamped tight but not the second. I think I may do that, then slide the broken portion of the shaft up in the hub, tighten the u bolt, and weld the axle shaft back together enough to bolt duel onto hub, and drive the tractor onto a trailer and haul home to the shop. Does anyone have any advice, also I will V out the axle shaft to weld up,and I know it is steel but what recommendation for rod would you use? I will be using an AC welder ran by a pto generator to preform the operation. Will 7018 be good enough or is there something better, remember this is not going to the fair, just my shop floor. Thanks Jon
