Just one factor that will make beans shorter is thinner population which I think many farmers are doing now. Lack of competition makes them shorter. We plant both 15 and 30's at the same pop about 125-140,000. the rowed beans appear taller to me.

I also remember years ago using a yellow pre's. that slowed them down. I remember noticing how much more vigorous the early soybeans were when we quit using them.
