| I was there about 3 years ago and have cut back drastically on both wheat and barley. For barley I grow enough for my feed needs and for wheat I grow enough for my cover crop seed and for a few neighboring farmers. All it has to do is germinate and be relatively clean. It cost a lot of money and is a challenge to grow high quality, high yielding wheat and the market is not rewarding us enough for our efforts and the risks we take. I do know that wheat hasn't been all rosy for the buyers either as a lot of scabby wheat was bought 3 years ago before they realized how big the problem was. The buyers have been blending it off with better wheat the past 2 years just to get rid of it. | |
