Subject: RE: Growing Tomato Plants from Seed

SE Nebraska
We use the 3" or so peat pots to start ours. Put 3 or 4 seeds in each with some potting soil. We just put them in a greenhouse style of tray with the clear plastic top. Put some water in the bottom once a week or so. We set them on a table by the south window and have a grow light above them. When they sprout, we leave the top off. After they are a couple of inches tall we put a fan blowing on them. It tends to dry the soil out, so you may have to water them more frequently. The fan helps the stem to bulk up since they have to fight the wind. When the weather gets warm enough we put them outside in the day time. When frost danger has passed they go into the garden. Sometimes we put them in too early and have to cover them up with blankets if there is a late frost.
