Cash flow is just one of the measurements of how well a farm is doing. The first question you have to ask is where will I be in 30 years? I know some dairy farms where they run the dairy and didn't modernize very much but never paid for the real estate the farm was on as their parents let them coast along. Then when the parents passed away the estate had to be divided among the siblings and the son running the farm was forced off because he had very little equity. Cash flow can be tight for a variety of reasons, the farm might have invested in some real estate which will be a nice nest of eggs some day. Cash flow is important but a accurate balance sheet will tell a decent story of where the farm is heading. If the money is not being invested in the farm there should be capital invested in some kind of a retirement fund.
