Subject: RE: Branding cattle

Lander, WY
Has to do with availability and how "pretty" a brand is. Here in Colorado, it's impossible to register a new two character brand, and tough to find a "pretty" three character brand. Four character brands are no fun to put on a cow... A single character brand? Those have been taken for 100 years. Things that roll off the tongue are popular, and some brands just look better, especially when burned into hide. We have a reverse lazy R quarter circle. Mom owns Bar VF. My aunt owns Grandpa's old -/5D. That was registered in the 50's, he wanted the 5D and had to go to four characters back then to get it. Things like flying W, diamond D, -D, those brands are just "nice" so people will pay more for them, for their cattle/ranch or just for a "neat" factor.

Any time a beef animal changes hands here in Colorado it has to have a brand inspection. Through the auction they will have a brand inspector onsite. Private sales you have to call (and pay for) a brand inspection.
