I think we're all on the same page. Here is how I would sum it up:

A well calibrated yield monitor will give you totals with minimal error, but minimal error in your totals don't guarantee you have a well calibrated yield monitor.

In a lot of cases flow rates are normally distributed for a given field and set of operating conditions, so I think it is quite possible to have low highs and high lows and come up with the same means, especially with single point calibration yield monitors.
