I don't think cutting out fertilizer is the answer. Sooner or later you pay for that. One thing that has saved me money is unneeded trips across the field (fuel, steel) and shopping for everything. Suggestions such as spreading your own fertilizer and spraying are just no brainers for us. I can't believe the number of guys that sit in their chair and pay a custom applicator to do those jobs.
