Subject: Root Pruning a tree for transplant

NW Central Ohio
...I believe nurseries root prune, or shove a shovel around their transplants at a particular time of year to make them grow more roots for transplant. When would one go about doing that on say a redbud tree that you've found in a woods? I have a particularly nice looking one I'd like to move into the yard...but hesitate to move it without some planning.
