We made it up to 1700 acres this past year and I had to hire 2 guys and dad had 2 guys.

I am really rethinking this whole thing now, I'd much rather grow higher value crops (edible beans, squash, niche markets for grains) and have fewer acres. I would love to have no employees to worry about keeping busy, getting hurt, feeling responsible to when there isn't much in winter...

Smaller and more diverse is where I'm headed

Thank you for helping my thought on bigger is better. More acreage vs more profit, it is time for farmers to look at the bottom line more than the acreage. Does one really make that much more farming 1700 acres when they have to hire 4 guys vs you and your dad farming say 1000, allowing someone else the opportunity to get into farming with that 700. Is the profit from that 700 any different than saving the same amount by not hiring the extra workers and buying the extra equipment needed to run that extra acreage.
