I'm going to do it anyway though!

Why does anyone keep relying on a service bulletin that was released in 1983? I read a lot of what you post Jon and agree mostly, but oils are not the same now as they were in 1983. Machine may be same, I've got plenty here that are that old and older, but the oil formulations and specs have moved on.

I think the low emission oils are a legitimate concern as regards flat tappet cams. Not too hard to find non LE formulations though. I don't have any macn=hinery that new myself!

Easy now LOL ;-) I post that because before that date, IH said NO multi viscosity oil in 400 series engines, #30 or #10, no multi weight stuff as the IH cam / lifter profile would destroy the viscosity improver in the multi weight, causing an oil breakdown that would leave you with a poor quality 15 wt oil that was death to a flat tappet cam.
Big thing is to find a Diesel oil that still has a full load of ZDDP EP additive to keep the flat tappet cam alive.
