...you shouldn't be afraid of a rye crop in a wet spring. Just don't over apply seed. The rye draws moisture from the soil...and even if you think it's too wet to plant...you can usually get great emergence if you just plant deep enough. If you spray it a week to 10 days before planting...I don't think it's much of an issue. But if you still don't like rye, wheat will work just as well. I've grown some of the best corn I ever had on some clay loam when I disc chiseled it and planted it to wheat a little late in the fall...had too much frost heaving to keep it for a grain crop...so I sprayed it 3 days ahead of planting and sowed some corn into it. I had untouched soybean residue in the field right beside it....and the difference in stand was significant, the field with wheat in it was much better.
