Subject: RE: Picking rocks..... any geologists on board?

western NY
speeking of rock piles I have an observation or question. Last week I loaded up a bucket of rocks from the fence row to fill a washout on a ditch bank and noticed that most of the rocks down under the few large ones on top are rather small, much too small to bother picking up especially since they must have been put there by stone boat. I've made this observation many times before when digging in an old stone pile or fence.

My question is did they just pick every rock they saw or have the rocks eroded and shrunk over the last 50-75-100years since they were piled.

The other question is has anyone ever brought in a crusher to get rid of a stone wall fence? We have burried and hauled them but most of the fence rows I have left to get rid of are way to big to just burry.
