Subject: RE: offset size seed openers on a 7000 planter

Statesville, NC
I put one new opener disc each unit on my 7000 at the beginning of the season. I try to get at least a 3/8" difference in diameter, which would be 3/16" at the edge. It has worked well for me and I removed the unit mounted coulters. I figure with limited down pressure on an older planter, the weight concentrated on the openers is better than the weight split between the opener and coulter. I have been buying JD standard 3mm opener discs, and they are sharp. I tried Shoup this time, and the opener discs are not nearly as sharp as the JD ones. I haven't tried it in the ground yet. Anyone else noticed Shoup discs are not as sharp? Not sure at this point if I should try to sharpen them. They have about 1/32" blunt edge.
