Hutchinson, MN | Rereading your original post, I'll weakly try to answer some of the other ?'s. What condition are the cows in? If they are thinner than they usually are at calving, you'll really need more energy to save the calves. Watch the other cows closely, if they are losing condition, you might start having weak calves (the cow will starve the calf to save herself first). My seat-of-the-pants management style would have me judging how aggressively they are eating compared to other years. If they eat everything in sight their going to lose body condition soon. Remember I'm a Dairyman, I got myself into something I maybe shouldn't have.
