agronomist here:

in my 2 cents, starter fert is one of the best investments to make on the farm. it will 9 times out of 10 pay. i mean mother nature can turn the rain off like she did last year and then you are screwed either way. i dont care if it is 10-34-0 or progerm and sure K, JUST GET IT ON.

I agree with your comments, and I always use a starter fertilizer!
