You can not (wont work) move the hard drive from one computer to another, (unless is the same make/model/identical)
It could work if both drives are SATA and if you start Windows in safe mode. You'll need to download network and video drivers for XP to make it fully functional.
I have exchanged motherboards or CPUs a few times before without changing the disk, which is similar to moving the disk to a new computer, but never both at the same time though, so I don't know if that would work for sure, but it does not cost anything but a bit of time to try.
But yeah, it would be an extreme solution, to be used only if there are some critical applications that can't run at all on Windows 8 and if keeping the old PC functional is not possible. If a critical app cannot run on Windows 8, it means there is nobody supporting the app anymore, and the XP workaround would be a short term not viable solution anyway.
N.B.: To start Windows in safe mode, press the F8 key at startup, after the BIOS/UEFI screen or POST messages appear, before Windows start.
