KSU is right, "Knock it off" would be the call to end an engagement, particularly for safety reasons. Hard decks are really there in the training environment to keep them high enough that a jet that has departed controlled flight should still have room to recover, instead of making an expensive crater in the desert floor. A for-real fight is going to inevitably work lower from the combination of G, energy, fuel state, a hundred other factors- it will never get higher. They have to train to keep that altitude in their situational awareness without terra firma being the actual thing that ends it.

There's quite a bit of good stuff in Top Gun, and quite a bit of Hollywood garbage. BTW, you spelled it right, Topgun is what they call the school, Top Gun is the movie.
