| "No Joy" means one pilot can't see the other aircraft, or I am looking but haven't found it yet. Sometimes it's because of the sun, blending in with the landscape, in the clouds, or a number of other reasons. I am an Air Force weapons controller and hear this phrase all the time. "Knock it off" or "terminate" means the fight or engagement is over or being called off for some reason.
Hard decks are set to ensure a plane stays above something. Could be clouds, a mountain, tower, etc. Hard decks are set and a plane is not supposed to go below it. As mentioned above, instructors sometimes have special rules that allow them to go below it, especially if they are playing "red" air (or the enemy). But most of the time, it's a safety thing and all players are supposed to remain above it. There are many things in Top Gun and any military jet movies that are inaccurate because Hollywood likes to make it more exciting than it really is.
