Rolla, ND
Staff doesn't pay much attention to "Do Not Disturb" because people leave the sign on the doorknob even when gone all the time. So it ends up being kind of like the door closing button in the elevator that in some cases isn't even hooked up. It's just something for you to do that makes you feel better but doesn't do anything. Try it at a fancy hotel, hang the card and call for roomservice. Result is they knock and bring the food. If you are noisy, they call from the desk and so on, hanging the card doesn't do one single thing most of the places. The drunk screaming at 3 a.m. sure doesn't seem to care.

What was lacking was communication on the staff's part. You were there just for the one day and hadn't checked out yet. Though even the checkout has gotten to be rather optional. Maybe you noticed how many hotels have gone to shoving the receipt under the door and really couldn't care less if you check out or not. Seems a lot of people don't bother to checkout anymore either, they just leave the cards in the room and leave. Some don't bother leaving the cards.

I would say there should have been more communication between staff in your case because that really is pretty early to go to a room with the sign hanging. Maid should have done the other rooms first, but then some of the maids aren't really that great at thinking things through.

You mentioned the oil field workers in the area, well that's kind of a nightmare for the maids because it's pretty much just as likely the guy is sleeping at noon than at 9. Depending on when shift change is, it might be more likely the guy is sleeping at 9 and that could be why she knocked so early.

Would seem to me the other alternative would be to just keep charging you for the room as long as the card is on the handle. Some people wouldn't like that either.
