Subject: Re: Tillage Radish vers Oil Seed Radish-forage radish

SE PA
chimel,
In answer to your question, "forage radish" sort of fits into the category of a brand, although not necessarily marketed as such- it is not defined but rather a name assigned to a radish by people who are using them for various reasons. It so happens that what ended up as a branded- an now variety- Tillage Radish, came out of the U of MD cover crop radish research which to this day is still referred to as "forage radish" in U of MD literature. So, if there is a comparison to the "forage radish" that U of MD is known for, there is indeed a very close connection genetically to the variety- Tillage Radish. There may be other "forage radishes" sold under a brand name but without knowing the history of the genetics it may be a selection that was specifically targeting the forage market or simply any radish use.
Regarding black radishes, i've seen them in Europe and they are pretty cool looking. As far as i know they are used mostly as a vegetable for human consumption.
