Galahad, Alberta | Step one: Keep your core warm. If your body is warm, your extremities will stay warmer. I like a couple of layers under my winter coat. Hoodies are good because you can pull the hood up to keep the wind off the back of your neck. Most of your body heat is lost through the top of your head, neck and shoulders. Keep that heat in and your extremities will be warmer longer.
Step two: Dry everything out, everytime you use it.
Step three: Leather thinsulate gloves with a storm cuff. Hard to find with the storm cuff but it makes a huge difference. If it is real cold, thin cotton gloves like others suggested above, inside of good leather mitts. If you have to take off the mitt to do fine work, you still have the cotton glove to hold in a bit of heat.
