The older gas tractors can do fine if they are maintained and have the octane they need. I have a '68 Farmall 544 gas, C200 engine, which is the same family as the 656 engine except four cylinder and larger bore. It will run strong all day long, but it has electronic ignition, the distributor advance is working properly, an I only use 92 or 93 octane gas. The operators manual on this tractor specifies a minimum 91 octane, and if you try using 87 it will knock and not run well. I have seen many old gas tractors with the distributor advance rusted up and not working, springs rusted and broken, and people keep rebuilding the carburetors and running 87 octane, and wondering why they don't run well.

Big block muscle cars were great, but the modern muscle cars will leave them in the dust, with much smaller engines and a lower grade of gas. Lots of advances in technology and materials.
