I did have PATA and SATA drives hooked up at the same time (at least with a cdrom as the PATA drive), but I recall there being specific motherboard issues on some early SATA machines. I think there were bios issues regarding compatibility and which was the boot drive. My memory may be off though. It could also just be that a mixed system slowed down disk access.
