BSOD's are most often hardware instigated but there are exceptions and occasionally during diagnostics a driver/kernal is excommunicated.
Just for grins you may slip in the XP disc and try to repair before jumping through the other hoops unnecessarily. If XP can not repair consider trying the HDD manufacturers firm ware update or reinstall.
BTW pcdecrapifier uses the McFee removal tool.
