I agree with you. If you are running a business where you handle any kind of sensitive information , then you should definately go with something more thorough than a free AV.
I tend to underestimate the severe lack of common sense that the normal computer user has also. My machines stay clean because I understand what to look for and what to stay away from. Normal users do not. I should probably try to be more realistic when recommending AV to people.
