If it's XP, right click My Computer and left click Properties, Left click the Hardware tab and then left click the Device Manager Button. If you have a yellow exclamation point by any of the devices, right click them and then click install driver. This is where you'll need the driver disk for the NIC.
If what Ed said above doesn't work, you can try deleting the device that shows up with the exclamation, then reboot. Your machine should automatically recognize the device once you reboot. It may then ask for the driver disk.
