Subject: RE: Scanning old photos

39.48, -82.98

I did some research and some experimenting, Ed, and have settled on 1200 dpi TIFFs, 24-bit color, no Unsharp Mask.

This may be overkill on resolution, according to some sources, but on enlargement 720 dpi does show more pixelation than does 1200. I want to be able to crop in close on faces or buildings in the background -- and I figure this is my only chance to have these irreplaceable photos on my scanner.

I'm using 24-bit color to preserve the sepia hues -- and to make it easier to edit out blemishes some day. USM makes many of the images look better from the scanner but I think that should be done after archiving, when getting them ready for publishing.
