Subject: Scanning old photos

39.48, -82.98

We had a family reunion yesterday and I scanned some old family photos to add to a display. Now I'm thinking about scanning the whole album and wonder how others are doing it.

After scanning a couple dozen photos at 720 dpi and saving as JPG, it occurs to me that I should have started out saving as TIFF and perhaps at a higher resolution. All are B&W, though they have taken on a sepia tint over the years -- and that should perhaps be recorded by saving as a 24-bit color rather than grayscale image type.

Disk space is not a real concern and I expect to have to convert before using them in a document. Many are not too sharp, so 720 dpi may suffice? Would 1200 or 2400 be better?
