middle TN | Some parts of the country are priced differently. Here in the Southeast, Florida, and I think maybe an area in the Southwest are priced by Fat/Skim. In this part of the world, most of the milk is used for fluid, that is, bottled milk. Our total # of skim/cwt x skim price+ total # of butterfatxBF price per lb= $ per cwt. We don't get paid for protein or other solids. There are some quality bonus programs that vary by handler, ours is up to $.50 for PI bacteria within a certain range and up to$.50 for somatic cell counts between 300000 and 150000 on a sliding scale. We don't have a PPD. Hauling is based on how far from closest bottling plant that receives milk plus a fuel surcharge I think other Co-ops do it differently, and independent milk is negotiated between hauler and the producer. Right now my hauling is @ $1.35/cwt.
