Subject: Yield monitoring idea

Winkler, Manitoba Canada
As yield monitoring is almost assumed to be part of harvest at this point, I wonder why oem companies do not take the lead and design the clean grain elevator to accurately weigh the grain as it is elevated instead of using the impact plate or electric eyes.

One way to accomplish this would be to change the clean grain elevator to a bucket elevator and have a drive system that could sense the torque required to lift the grain. This could be accomplished in many different ways, 1)by sensing the pressure in a hydraulic drive system, 2)hydraulic drive with a torque arm and load cell, or an electric drive measuring current. Obviously the elevator would need to be isolated from cross augers for this to work and have good bearings so the torque required to run the elevator empty would be consistent. Combining the torque with the rpm mathematically should give an accurate representation of weight when calibrated.

I know an electric system such as this is used on a bucket elevator in a local grain handling establishment to load out and is fairly accurate.
