Beyond being the cheapest octane in the world, ethanol is not near as nasty as the other stuff they put into gasoline.

Here is the main reason ethanol is here to stay. the world needs octane and corn based ethanol is the cheapest octane in the world by far. It is cheaper to buy octane from ethanol than make it in a refinery. But heck, what do I know. Spread to a Suboctane RBOB does not matter.
