Subject: Northern Illinois corn

Driftless SW Wisconsin

After driving around N ILL the past couple days for the first time in a while, I have to say I was very surprised, bordering on shocked, by the widely varying condition of the corn as I saw it from the road.

I've been looking at corn in this area for many years and have never seen it vary this much.  Obviously there are a lot of wet spots but even on some of the best soils in the world with lots of tile common there is a lot of short, yellow looking corn that obviously is severely short on N.

While folks in this area often pour the coals to corn when it comes to applying N, most of it must be long gone by the looks of the crop that I saw the past few days. fwiw.
