Subject: Installing new hydrant

West Central Illinois
I wasn’t sure where to post this, whenever we install a new Iowa hydrant on the farm we put a galvanized t on bottom with 8 to 10 inch galvanized pipe on each side then convert to usually all pvc, over the years I’ve had to dig up some hydrants and replace the iron pipe or a piece of it. A plumber once told my dad to do it this way so the iron pipe help stabilize the hydrant. Is this a common practice or do you guys just put pvc on bottom of hydrant? We think the iron pipe isnt as good as it used to be or something in our soils makes it not last.
