I've used my good friends Lewis winch, the cable spool type, several times. It works quite well on a good saw. It can be cumbersome to set up, need to chain the saw to a good anchor. Important to always have the cable feed straight into the winch, no pulling off at an angle.
Have also hunted with some guys that use the Lewis capstan style winches to pull elk out of the woods. They carry 2 quarter mile spools of rope in pickups, walk the rope out to the elk, chain the winch to his head, wrap rope around capstan, sit on elk and ride him back up the hill. Works good.
