OK Panhandle
Rugged is the choline formulation of 2,4-d, the same formulation the Enlist system uses. The Winfield reps swear that you can spray it right next to cotton or tomatoes with the correct wind to prevent physical drift, and there will be no volitalization later that will harm those crops.

I don't know that it is a better formulation than the esters or amines, it's just different. I stop spraying the esters when daytime temps get over 75 and then switch to amine or Rugged depending on the weather conditions and crops growing close to me. The performance of Rugged has been good for me, and I'd spray it more except that it's twice the price per gallon.

Kstate has some interesting information on using the different types of 2,4,-d preplant in fall wheat. I don't know if it applies directly to corn, but basically they say the ester formulation breaks down faster in the soil, so if you can't wait the 14 days between application and planting, an ester is the safest choice.
