Sioux County, NWIA | If it kicks back during starting but otherwise runs normally once it is started I would strongly suspect the compression release built into the cam is not working. First thing to check there is the valve clearance, which you did already so that is ruled out. If the valve clearance is excessive, it defeats the effect of the compression release. To see of the compression release is working, with the valve cover off turn the engine over very slowly by hand. There will be the normal valve action of intake and exhaust valves but at some point somewhat before TDC on the compression stroke you should see one of the valves open very slightly.
If the engine kicks back but cannot be gotten started then I would suspect a sheared flywheel key that is giving the wrong ignition timing. | |
