Northern Ohio | The goal for the rye/clover strip is to build biomass and add N for the 2022 crop. I believe we can do this better with a strip that is growing for a longer period of time than if we planted it at the same time as the corn. We are hoping we have better weed control in the strips also.
We plan to inner seed a cover in the corn at last cultivation, probably medium red clover. We plan to leave strips of that cover for the next year. This system should always have at least a strip of mature cover, full cover most of the year.
We went with a 10” strip because we don’t want to hurt the corn. We’ve seen 50” of cover with 10” tilled for the crop and it hurts the yield too much. We may try a wider biomass strip next year, not sure what is optimal.
We are looking into letting the rye go to seed. Same with clover in our clover/corn strips. | |
