| Have a neighbor who was on I think AL Unser's pit crew back in the late '60s and early '70s. He was a mechanic at a large Ford dealership in Albuquerque while in college and his boss had enough connections with the race team to get him the opportunity to sweep the shop floor after work. One night the crew asked him over to find out if he knew what something was, it was a CV shaft which was brand new, Ford had just started using it and Dennis was a Ford trained mechanic so he was able to disassemble it and show them how it worked, at some point after that he joined the race team. He said prior to that U joints had been a limiting factor in car reliability on the longer races but CV shafts would easily last the entire race. | |
