Subject: cloning hardrive?

Mason City, IL
If I use a external hardrive to clone my current computer, and then get a newer faster one, will I have to reinstall all of my programs? Is there an easy way to move programs from one computer to another? My daughters computer is the same brand as mine but the ram chips run at 333mhz and mine is only at 2xx mhz? It seems faster and she no longer uses it and I have it upstairs for the wife to use on the internet. The other one has 2g. of ram and mine has 1.5g. Just playing with the notion of swapping them. (daughter just got married/husband has a good computer and she got a laptop for herself instead)
