Subject: updating drivers, why?

East central Iowa

Many times when a problem crops up the advice is update your drivers.

But, why?  If you have a computer that's worked for years with all the drivers on it why does it suddenly need a driver update?  It's not like you or a machine that parts wear out.  What was written in a driver stays.  It doesn't rust, get corroded, overheat, wear out etc.

Just one of those questions that has bugged me for years.  (first started programs by writing a database program on a Commodore 64)
