I swear, if I lived up there and owned property with barns like those, that’s what I would live in.
I guess there were never barns like that here. There used to be a lot of good sized mule barns from the old days but, while impressive to me as a kid, they had nothing on northern dairy barns. Sadly the termites have about gotten all the old mule barns now.
I've seen a couple "yankee" barns around middle GA but my father told me they were part of some government program from way back in the day. Everything around here was heart pine & relatively flat roof, no snow to shed and no one really put up hay. Like you said though not much left standing, there used to be sharecropper shacks and mule barns all over my farm. |
