I can't help you with your current problem, but will offer advice for when you get back running again...

I now store everything in iCloud. Anyone running Apple products these days probably has an AppleID and some iCloud storage. I pay 99 cents/mo for some additional storage. I no longer use my internal hard drive for anything other than the OS. I have slow DSL and it works well enough that I prefer the security of my files being safe (and accessible by all of my devices) over the risk of losing everything to a HD crash. If my computer dies or gets destroyed, I now get a different one, boot it up, log in to my account, and all my stuff is right there. Some may not like this idea, thinking that Apple has access to their files. If they want access to my PDF versions of operator manuals, have at it.

There is one, imo crucial, point that you don't mention with your iCloud storage.

Offsite cloud storage makes data ownership and control a LOT murkier.
Any changes off site and its quite easy that you're sol for your data.

Would recommend a BluRay writer - - - can get to about 125 GB of data. Doesn't have to last forever - - - but backups are very necessary.

Here I've got lots of redundancies - - - RAID10 for storage.
Yes more headaches - - - - likely less issues!

There is no perfect solution!!!!
