The area pictured is a fertile soil but it is also a difficult soil to work. It's sort of a cut area or hillside where the better more mellow soil has been moved to the other end of the garden. It's that type of soil that you could make good bricks out of. Low organic matter. The last few years I have been doing some cover crops and leaving those areas out for a season and letting them fully mature.
