Subject: RE: ih hydro tractors ?

Southeast Virginia
I still run my dad's 544 Farmall Hydro he bought new in 1971. He also bought a 656 Hydro for plowing. It was so loud from the hydro whine when working hard, he traded the 656 in on a gear drive. I remember as a kid we could hear him inside the house when he was running it in the furthest field away.

The 544 was primarily used for pulling a peanut combine where the hydro was ideal for running between 3/4 to 1.5 mph depending on harvest conditions. I used it in that role until 2009 when I quit growing peanuts. Today it only runs a grain augur, blade and a 6 foot bush hog. My brother ran it about 7 hours yesterday trimming the edges of fields.

Has around 6,200 hours on it. At about 5,000 I had the hydro pump rebuilt. It wasn't terribly expensive and the service guy said it was not as "worn out" as some he had seen on tractors that were worked harder.
