Verizon does use a sim card BUT they also use your device's iemi/serial number. With Verizon you CAN NOT just swap a sim in a device and go, you have to call, give them the numbers, pay the fee, then go.

That being said, I bought an unlocked note 8 and 9. The note 8 went fine and the 9 is still waiting for the 8 to crap out.

This is not the case for iPhones. I know that this is about Samsung devices, but I have been buying "unlocked" iPhones direct from Apple for years. I refuse to buy from Verizon or AT&T direct because then the phone is "locked" to thier system. When I buy unlocked the device can use either service provider. When my new device shows up it is as simple as swapping sim cards and restoring data from my old device to the new one. So with Verizon I FOR SURE 100% CAN just swap my sim card and go. I have to make no phone call and give them no numbers and I pay zero fee to go.
